Roots of Integrity

Journeying through darkness, in a world that seems upside down
Straining every moment, to seek victory against mud and stone
Lost in their purpose, invisibly nourishing the tree
Holding firm with confidence, are the roots of integrity

Either the caress of a gentle breeze, or the fury of a violent gale
Standing fast with fortitude, standing fast to tell a tale
Making the pain of every pull, a deep delving opportunity
Holding firm with confidence, are the roots of integrity

Either the chops of a swinging axe, or the tragedy of a torch’s wrath
Resilient in their mission, right down to the deep anchoring root
Pushing forth a tiny sprout, as the harbinger of vitality
Holding firm with confidence, are the roots of integrity

Who is holding on to who, is but an ancient mystery
Is the tree purpose of the soil or the soil holding on to the tree?
May the roots of thee hold on to values, and the values hold on to thee
Holding each other firm with confidence, as the beacons of integrity
